Longhouse with most graduates
The academic achievement of Uma Juman is phenomenal in that it’s extremely rare to see many graduates coming from one single longhouse. It was unheard of until Uma Juman’s feat was acknowledged by both the state and nation.
Uma Juman’s success in producing graduates is a source of pride not only to its residents but also the state of Sarawak.
In October, the longhouse won the national level Desa Cemerlang and Gemilang Award for education, organised by the Regional and Rural Development Ministry.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi presented the Award plus RM50,000 to the 15-member delegation from the longhouse at a ceremony in Kampung Paya Rumput, Malacca.
The achievement of Uma Juman, which now has 96 doors, is due to the resolve of its residents to make education their main thrust in catching up with the other communities.
The longhouse was relocated to the Sungai Asap Resettlement Scheme eight years ago to make way for the Bakun Dam project. It now holds the record of producing 87 graduates — possibly the largest number from any one single longhouse in the state. There are one PhD, eight Masters, 36 Bachelors degree and 42 diploma holders.
